Young winners of a competition will make their designs come to life by recreating them on a building in Workington’s Vulcan Park.
Workington Town Council came up with the Love my Hut competition in January and contacted the local schools. The competition asked children to create a design for a small building within the town centre park, used as a workshop area by the council’s .estates team.
In total, 120 entries were received and the five winning designs were chosen by the town’s mayor and mayoress.
Workington Town Council worked with artist, Beth Gray, to create templates of the children’s designs so they could easily be outlined and recreated on the walls of the hut. Beth also combined the designs to ensure they could fit on four walls.
Schoolchildren will work with Beth and Workington Town Council staff this week to complete the work on the hut in time for the Queen’s platinum jubilee tea party, which will be held in Vulcan Park from 11am to 4pm on Saturday June 4.
The event will feature a live music stage, broadcast of the BBC, face painting, children’s entertainment, fun fair, dog show, tea leaf reader, balloon modelling and more!
Chair of the council’s culture committee, Councillor Carole Armstrong, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the outcome of our competition and thank the schools for getting involved. I think we are all as excited as the children to see their designs come to life.”
