Pupils from Carlisle’s Austin Friars have raised enough money to fund a day’s worth of services at Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.
Year six pupils completed a 7.5-mile loop around Place Fell, near Patterdale, and raised £2,227.05 for their efforts.
It costs £2,126.46 to run Jigsaw’s provision for a day. Jigsaw provides day care, support and activities to children and young people from across Cumbria living with a life limiting illness.
Rebecca Mitchell, year 6 class teacher, said: “The children are actually studying mountains at the moment so this walk fit in well with their classroom topic. They found it challenging at times but were all really determined to reach their end goal and I’m really proud of them.”
Head girl of the junior school, Poppy Bull, 11, said “We enjoyed doing the walk because we knew we were raising money for a good cause.”
Matthew Coulthard, 11, head boy of the junior school, added: “It was also good that we got to spend time outdoor with our friends.”
Vicki Lesley, of Jigsaw’s fundraising team, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to the pupils from Austin Friars who completed this walk in aid of Jigsaw.
“Their incredible efforts on that day could help pay for one whole day of services at the hospice, meaning that local children will be able to be looked after by the dedicated medical and care staff at Jigsaw.”
