A drunk man who claimed to be a football hooligan in the city centre after a Carlisle United match has been fined by magistrates.
Neil Broom, 34, came to the attention of police on foot patrol several hours after a League 2 game at Brunton Park between United and Exeter City on Saturday, April 9.
Officers in the Botchergate area at 10.10pm were asked to attend Bar Solo amid reports of a highly intoxicated man who had been refused alcohol by staff.
He was escorted from the premises and subjected to a welfare check. His speech was slurred, he was unsteady on his feet and his eyes were half-open.
Broom made concerning comments to police and became very emotional.
Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard today he also made reference to being a football hooligan and began singing football songs. “While holding a large Exeter football club flag,” said prosecutor Pam Ward. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Broom, of Shaldon Grove, Aston, near Sheffield, admitted a charge of being drunk and disorderly in a phone call to a court clerk. He didn’t have the finances to attend in person, it was stated.
Magistrates fined Broom £80 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
