Former Conservative MP for Penrith Rory Stewart has called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to go.

Appearing on BBC Question Time from Surrey last night, Mr Stewart said the confidence vote faced by the under fire PM earlier this week showed that Mr Johnson had less support than embattled Theresa May at the height of the Brexit deal wrangling.

Mr Stewart said: “The biggest issue is about governing. He is now fighting for his survival day in and day out. It’s going to be very difficult to produce good, long-term policies for the country because all Downing Street is thinking about is the next newspaper headline and that is no way to run a country.”

Mr Stewart, an author and podcaster, ran as a leadership candidate in 2019 and is no longer a member of the party.

The panel had been asked how Mr Johnson could stay on as leader without the backing of his party after 148 of his own MPs voted against him with 211 in support.

Mr Stewart said: “I think he should go. The figures are closer to 75 per cent of his back benchers having voted against him which is worse than what happened to Theresa May.”
