George and Dragon, Clifton

A 31-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire in a popular Eden gastropub.

Emergency services were called to the George and Dragon in Clifton in the early hours of Sunday.

Firefighters from Lazonby, Shap and Penrith tackled the blaze, which the fire service said was in the beer cellar.

The gastropub is part of the Askham Collection and owner Charles Lowther said on Sunday: “We’re obviously devastated about the situation but so relieved that everyone is OK.

“We’re currently contacting any guests who have bookings with us but unfortunately, it will be months before we’re able to reopen.

The woman, of Penrith, was arrested in relation to two incidents, on May 20 and June 12. She has been released on police bail.
