Carlisle’s magistrates’ court

Eight people are facing a violent disorder charge following an incident which began inside a Penrith town centre pub before spilling outside.

An appeal for information was made to the public — and CCTV images were also released — after detectives began probing trouble which was reported to have flared in the Burrowgate area on September 19 2020.

A police spokesman said in the aftermath that an alleged assault had occurred inside The Pinny pub, before disorder involving a large number of people occurred outside the premises.

One man was said to have been badly hurt and taken to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, for treatment, while a man from Penrith was reported to have sustained minor injuries.

Eight people have since been charged with violent disorder.

They are Adam Crozier, 22, of Bury St Edmund’s, Suffolk; Thomas Forbes, 24, of West Mersea, near Colchester; Mark Rowlandson, 35, of Stanhope Road, Carlisle; Daniel Edmunds, 41, of Sharow, near Ripon; Cyrus Church, 32, of Mirfield, West Yorkshire; Thomas Cross, 31, of Stanton, near Bury St Edmunds; Harry-joe Favill 27, of Retford, Nottinghamshire; and Luke Way, 31, of Bury St Edmunds.

The charge alleges that when present together with three or more others, they used or threatened unlawful violence, and the conduct taken together was such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for their personal safety.

When the case came before Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, it was sent — in respect of seven of the men — to the city’s crown court where they are all due to appear in front of a judge on July 11.

In the case of an eighth man, a warrant without bail was issued for his arrest.
