Emergency services were called out after fears that a man had been swept away to sea.

Police were contacted at around 7.40pm yesterday, August 1, by a woman reporting they had seen a man standing in the water up to his knees for a period of time at Whitehaven.

She looked away for a short period and when they looked back the man could no longer be seen. She called the emergency services due to her concern.

A search was carried out by Workington RNLI, and the Coastguard, including a helicopter.

No one was found and the search was stood down at around 10pm.

A police spokesman said: “At this time, Cumbria police has not been made aware of anyone missing since this incident who would fit the description.

“Police are keen to hear from anyone who can provide any further information.”

Anyone with information relating to this incident can report online atĀ www.cumbria.police.uk/reportitĀ quoting incident number 237 of 1 August, 2022 or call 101.
