A 90th minute equaliser earned Workington their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw at Prescot Cables.
It was another dramatic end for the Reds after they had been undone by the 96th minute winner for Mossley in the opening NPL West clash.
In the end a draw was probably a fair result, with Reds gaining their reward for a big finish after a rather uninspiring start.
Prescot, like Reds with a number of new faces in the line-up, were the better side in the first-half as the visitors posed few threats.
The only time home keeper Mitchell Allen was tested came from the penalty spot on 18 minutes.
It was given for a completely unnecessary hand ball in the area but although Lewis Reilly hit the spot kick well enough, Allen dived full length to turn it away.
That penalty miss had come four minutes after Prescot had taken the lead. Adam Hamill’s floated free-kick was volleyed past Jim Atkinson by John Murphy.
Atkinson had to make a couple of routine stops but knew nothing about a curling effort from Hamill which flew to safety off the top of the bar.
There were a couple of other moments of encouragement for Prescot when James Foley shot just wide and a cross deflected off a Reds defender just past the post.
Reds, however, lacked drive and intensity in the first-half and apart from the penalty had not looked like penetrating the home defence.
Thankfully there was an improvement in the second-half and although Allen didn’t have a shot to save until the 86th minute, there was more bite and urgency about Reds.
Manager Danny Grainger made three ntactical changes and eventually they got the rewards for their improvement.
There had been a frantic scramble on the home goal-line, which ended with Allen needing treatment and then the keeper had to go full length to hold a swerving effort from Reuben Jerome.
Time was running out, though, when skipper Conor Tinnion and Scott Allison linked well down the left and from the pull-back James Hooper drove home from close-range.
Manager Grainger said: “I was looking to bounce back with a win after Saturday but it was important to get something.
“We weren’t very good in the first-half but I thought we controlled the second half and deserved the point.”
Reds gave a debut to Niall Moran – on his 20th birthday – and he produced a very solid performance alongside Dan Wordsworth.
