What Tim Hortons could look like in Penrith

Up to 50 new jobs will be created as a restaurant chain has officially announced its plans to move into Penrith.

Tim Hortons, a popular Canadian chain which has over 50 branches in the UK, lodged planning applications for the site on Bridge Lane last month.

It sells coffee, doughnuts, burgers and toasted sandwiches.

Today, it said it was looking forward to opening its new restaurant and drive-thru – the first in Cumbria – later this year and would create up to 50 part- and full-time jobs.

Kevin Hydes, chief commercial officer of Tim Hortons franchise in the UK, said: “We have a huge fan base in the North of England, so we are particularly excited to bring Tim Hortons to Penrith for the first time.

“We know locals, and those in the wider county will be delighted to hear we’re bringing our Canadian charm to Cumbria, and we look forward to connecting with the wonderful community.

“Our amazing team, up and down the country, play a key part in the success of our brand and we are proud to be recruiting a large team for this restaurant with over 50 roles on offer.”

Planning applications were submitted to Eden Council on behalf of the firm – which is visited by more than 5.3 million Canadians a day – for building alterations and elevations, including recladding and advertisement consent for new signs.

The brand was founded in 1964 in Ontario and now has 4,500 stores.

Known affectionately as Timmy’s, the planning applications have been prepared and submitted by Williams Gallagher Town Planning Solutions Ltd (Williams Gallagher) on behalf of TH UK & Ireland Ltd.

A statement accompanying the application said: “Tim Hortons is a relatively new entrant to the UK market and can best be described as a restaurant chain with a coffee and bakehouse offer.”

The KFC branch closed its doors in May after the lease on the building ran out and was not renewed. At the time, KFC said it hoped it would reopen.
