An event held by Arlecdon Rams Masters Rugby League raised £3,300 for charity.
The money will be split between the Henderson Suite/Ward B at Whitehaven’s West Cumberland Hospital; the Great North Air Ambulance and MIND.
A number of fund-raising events were held at the event, over the August bank holiday weekend, including a well-supported auction of memorabilia which had been donated from sources including the county’s three professional rugby league clubs.

John Gaston, one of the organisers, said: “It was a great day which was enjoyed by everyone and blessed by fine weather. We are delighted with the amount of money raised and will be dividi9ng the amount among the three charities we selected.
“In fact we are taking part in a match this weekend in Carlisle when representatives from MIND will be there and we will be handing over a cheque.
“There is a plan to repeat the event next year but perhaps at a different venue and maybe linked to a Great Clifton Lions reunion.

“Former Lions players were involved on the day and thoroughly enjoyed it with two of them actually joining our subsequent training sessions at the Rams.
“The Henderson Suite/Ward B at the West Cumberland Hospital has been our own club charity throughout the year and the plan was to track the miles we covered during the season at training to eventually come up with a total mileage which might have taken us round the world.

“Whatever we raise from that idea will be added to what we raised on the bank holiday for them.”
As for the Masters Rugby League for Over-35s on the day it was contested by teams from Arlecdon, Maryport and Great Clifton on a round robin basis.

“We had lads from Barrow and Lancashire who travelled-up on the day and they filled in for Maryport and Clifton who didn’t quite have full numbers,” said John.
“It was great to see ex-players putting on their boots again and enjoying the games. I know it will have got a few of them interested in playing the Masters form of the game,” he added.
