
Workington and District Sunday League kicked off the new season two weeks later than planned – and with a minute’s silence ahead of all the games.
The tribute to the Queen was observed by all 12 teams in the new-look one division competition.
The six games produced a remarkable 46 goals with reigning champions Northside opening with the biggest win of the day.
On paper it was a tough one at Deer Orchard but they cruised to a 9-1 win as they started their bid to repeat their triumphs of last season when they landed the quadruple.
Tommy Whitehead led the way with four goals and also on target were Callum Killick (2), Jamie Bramley, Jack Wilson and Callum Doyle. Kyran Bertram replied for Orchard who are starting their 60th season in local football.
Mark Campbell also hit four goals and his strikes were the difference for Sun Inn Athletic as they beat Senhouse 5-3. Linden Wilson scored the fifth goal.
Connor Jarman, Terry Wharrier and Chris Taylor replied for Senhouse to keep them in it.
The other tight game was at Dearham where the home side lost 4-2 to Salterbeck whose new signing Max Litt, the former Flimby striker helped himself to a couple of goals. Nathan Brash and Kyle Davis were also on target.
Stalwart Steven Stoddart and Jack Brown replied for Dearham who played in a new strip donated by Avista Care.
Flimby Social Club might have lost top scorer Litt but they still opened with a 7-1 win over Seaton Rangers.
Jacob Baker grabbed a brace while Matthew Heaney, Lazo Rayner, Ryan Beattie, Peter Thompson and Sean Boal were also on the score-sheet with Jack Read replying for the Seaton side.
Blue Bell also hit seven against Sun Inn with the Aspatria side replying twice with goals from Mally Graham and Dan Pearson.
Greg Quayle (2), Carl Denver (2), Harry Watson, Tom Hutton and Robbie Watson were the scorers for Blue Bell.
In the other game Maryport Athletic were 4-1 winners over Rangers as Josh Pattinson, Macauley Sharp, Ciaran Laverty and Lewis Mattinson hit the target. Josh Dixon scored Rangers’ consolation.
