Manchester United’s fortunes might have improved on the field since last month but there’s still activity behind the scenes over a takeover.
Former Carlisle United owner Michael Knighton hit the headlines last month with a claim that he was putting together a formal offer to buy the club.
Knighton, 70, a former director who came close to buying United in 1989, was propelled back into the news when he claimed he was drawing up plans to submit a formal bid to buy the Reds from the Glazer family with the help of a consortium.
Now Knighton has revealed on his Twitter account that his plans are on course and he has apologised for not updating more.
He posted: “Thank you, all, for the wonderful messages of support. There is much going on behind the scenes.
“Things are moving forward as planned. I apologise I can’t be on this platform more, just bogged down in meetings. God bless and every good with to all of you. Your support is greatly appreciated.”
Knighton’s involvement in a takeover at Old Trafford was met with mixed views by supporters – pleased someone was attempting to buy-out the controlling Glazers, but doubting whether he had the financial clout needed,
There was more belief in a message from British businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, regarded as the richest man in the UK, that he too would be interested in buying the club if the opportunity presented itself.
