The co-founder of one of Carlisle’s most popular clubs has died suddenly in Cumbria.
Martin Lawson, of Carlisle, was also a journalist and co-founded the Front Page Club in 1984 with Bob Mungall and published a book about the club in 2020.
Live at the Front Page is the true story of a little cellar music club where everyone loved to play. Jazz legend Ronnie Scott, 60s and 70s superstar Steve Marriot, Cream bass player Jack Bruce, and Pentangle founder Bert Jansch are just a few of the dozens of musicians whose stories intertwine with the Thatcher era of the 1980s.
In Mr Lawson’s book, Mark Knopfler contributes his own thoughts about his background and influences during what he calls the ‘wilful’ destruction of the North’s industrial heritage in the 1980s.
Mr Lawson was an output editor in the formative years of Sky News in the 1990s.
John Ryley, of Sky News, said: “Martin was a formidable journalist playing a big part in building Sky News’ reputation for accurate journalism.
“He was wonderfully direct – and a warm, funny, kind individual who helped to steer so many people’s careers in broadcasting.”
