A man who was jailed for a multi-million-pound fraud has been found dead in his South Lakes home.

Mail Online reports that Stephen Evans, 38, was discovered by police in a rented bungalow in Kendal.

He was jailed in 2014 following a Ponzi scheme, which saw him splash out £1.5 million on cars – including a £200,000 Lamborghini – £250,000 on a racehorse, £300,000 on jewellery and £36,000 on yachts over just three years.

Known as the Wolf of Old Hall Street, he set up as a financial adviser – but returns his investors were getting were from new people he managed to lure into the scheme. Latterly, one investor gave him £3.7 million and got nothing in return.

By the end of 2012, he was being tracked by a private detective hired by one of his clients and gave himself up to police. At court, he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fraud and one count of converting criminal property, Mail Online said. He was jailed for five years.

It is understood that while living in Kendal, Mr Evans worked for charity the Bendrigg Trust and police visited his property after colleagues became concerned when he did not arrive at work last Tuesday.

An inquest into his death is due to be opened on October 13.
