A made-over Sands Centre is set to open to the public soon following it’s £27 million redevelopment.
The final touches are being made to the new leisure facilities at the Carlisle centre and will be open to the public from Monday November 14.
The new building is set across two storeys and accessed by an internal street and around 40,000 square foot has been added to the existing building.
The new facilities include a 25 meter main pool and a 20 meter learner pool with a moveable floor have been added, alongside a four-court sports hall with a spectator gallery, full equipped gym, spinning studio and dance studios. A café and bar are also set to be provided by Hickory’s.

The redevelopment also consolidates the existing arrangements with the North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust Musculoskeletal team. The MSK team already provide treatment services at the centre, but will be able to expand their services and develop new joint treatment and rehabilitation activities with GLL, who run the centre, and other partners.
Leader of Carlisle City Council, councillor John Mallinson, said: “I’d like to thank all those involved in driving the Sands Centre redevelopment forward during challenging times. It represents a cornerstone in our plans to support our communities by improving their health and wellbeing.
“This is a one-off opportunity with a dual benefit of all the facilities being on one site. I look forward to seeing its completion next month.”
The improved facilities also include a range of sustainable features which aim to support Carlisle City Council’s plans for reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and providing sustainable transport options.
