Leading Cumbrian business organisation calls for General Election

A leading Cumbrian business organisation says a General Election is the ‘right way forward’ following Liz Truss’ resignation as Prime Minister.

Suzanne Caldwell, of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, said it was not a party political comment – but a General Election would lead to stability and progress.

Following Ms Truss’ resignation this afternoon, the Conservative Party said it would hold a shortened leadership election – with the next Prime Minister announced by next Friday.

Contenders may include Rishi Sunak, Penny Mourdant and rumours abound the Boris Johnson is ‘taking soundings’ about throwing his hat in the ring.

Mrs Caldwell said: “Businesses and people are grappling with one of the most challenging periods in living memory, and there seems little prospect of that easing any time soon.

“That has been added to significantly by the turmoil in the Government, and, it has to be said, some of the decisions and statements made by those in power. To be frank the last few weeks beggar belief.

“This is not a party political comment and I know that all of Cumbria’s MPs are absolutely committed to the best interests of Cumbria, its businesses and its people.

“What we all need now is stability and a sensible and sensitive approach, which takes due regard of the range of interests and challenges and restores confidence.

“We’re in a very different position as country and economy from where we were at the last General Election and not only personnel but policies have changed and seem set to change further, considerably.

“So arguably a General Election, although disruptive in the short term, is the right way forward for future stability and progress.”
