Flimby Social recorded the most significant result in the week’s snooker fixtures.
They scored a 3-2 home victory against top tier champions Workington Conservative Club.
The L&L Property Contractors Snooker League fixtures stepped aside for knock-out action.
The Derwent Valley Asbestos Removal & Demolition sponsored Eric McMullen Memorial TKO Handicap Trophy Qualifying took centre stage.
Flimby’s Dan Long (+40 handicap) made the most of his start advantage to take the first and with Richard Kirkham (+35) completing a similar job in the second, two excellent wins gave the underdogs a crucial 2-0 lead.
Nevertheless, back came the Cons side and with Alan Moore (+10) performing superbly to turn around a significant handicap deficit Flimby were pegged back to 2-1.
In the next a tight affair held the key to unlocking the match win for Flimby, as Geoff Banton (+37) delivered a captains shift to put his team in front for an unassailable 3-1 lead.
As last season’s groups went down to frame difference the final frame still had plenty up for grabs.
Dave Holland (+29) was certainly up for this and in seizing every opportunity available he romped home to give the Cons side hope of qualifying as the match ended 3-2.
Workington’s United Club continued in their rich vein of form as they swept aside Workington’s Veterans Club with a 4-1 home victory.
It was Dave Chapman (+32) who opened up the match with a win for the United Club and with team mate Clive Lister (+19) following in confident fashion the score moved quickly to 2-0.
A brilliant victory for Paul Smith (+34) in the next gave the Vets outfit something to shout about, however, as Andrew Mitchelhill (+13) and Mark Suitor (+34) won the next two fairly comfortably the match ended with what looked like a straight forward victory for the United Club side.
Whitehaven’s Rack Shack also made the most of their home advantage in a 4-1 win over Maryport Social Club in a match that was closer than the score-line suggested.
Chris McKelvey (+41) took the first for the Whitehaven team but it was Andrew Sharp (+32) who levelled the match score at 1-1 with a black ball win in the second.
The next frame, however, proved to be even closer as this time a re-spotted black was required with the Rack Shack’s Andrew Moore (+37) making it 2-1.
Peter McAvoy (+37) won the evening’s most convincing frame, with a 30 break to boot, to make it 3-1 and as fellow Rack Shack cueist Nev Stitt (+40) won another black ball frame in the last a 4-1 score-line was delivered.
Finally, Workington Golf Club A got the better of their B side with a 4-1 victory, however as a couple of close frames went their way this proved to be the deciding factor.
A win for the A team’s Phil Sorfleet (+18) in the first soon made it 1-0 and as Bryan Walker (+21) constructed a frame-winning break of 37 in the next the match lead now stood at 2-0.
A black ball victory in the third by Stephen Jackson (+38) ensured the A side were to record a match win at 3-0, but with the B teams’ Fletcher Hodgson (+40) nicking the next the frame difference calculations came to mind.
In the final frame a surprisingly low scoring encounter developed, with Lewis Tilley (+40) grinding out a win.
The B side’s first go at the handicap TKO proved to be a baptism of fire as the new Division 2 side went down 4-1.
