Free drop-in sessions for communities to get together

A Cumbrian charity is launching a new series of community hub spaces.

The Northern Fells Group is organising drop-ins where locals can enjoy a free cuppa, or soup and a roll and spend a few hours chatting, playing board games
or reading the day’s papers.

There will also be the chance to view a classic film, provided by the Caldbeck Film Club.

The idea is to offer people a warm and child-friendly place to spend time and relax. Free transport can also be arranged.

The first session will be held at Caldbeck Village Hall on November 9. Other pop-ins will be organised by the charity in Mungrisdale and Ireby.

The charity is also helping to run a hub at the Hesket Newmarket Chapel every Tuesday from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

The group serves 3,700 residents spread over 200 square miles of rural and often remote areas of the north of the county.

The charity has played a vital role over the past 18 months in maintaining community life in a sparsely populated region of the county where many live in isolated areas.

Chief operating officer Andrea Sales said: “The Northern Fells Group has an excellent track record of providing timely needs led activities and services across our catchment area.

“Our communities are often isolated and wintertime can often further compound this. This winter staff and volunteers want to provide extra opportunities for people to get involved in informal, relaxed activities and grab a complimentary hot snack and cuppa. Everyone is welcome!”
