A familiar face is returning to Derwent Park next season after four years away as Workington Town add more experience to their squad for 2023.
Jason Mossop had three years with Whitehaven after leaving Town and then last season played at Hunslet.
Mossop told Cumbria Crack he is particularly looking forward to helping the younger players who have joined Town from the amateur ranks.
“I have been talking to the club for a little while now and came up to Workington to sign my contract on Tuesday when I stayed to join the first training session.
“I’ve been a pro for a lot of years now and I’d like to think my experience will help the coaching team at Town, particularly with the young players coming into the club,” he said.
Mossop relocated with his family due to work commitments in the Leeds area and last season played for Hunslet.
He said: “I only missed about four games for them which was due to a silly little injury. Hunslet were looking for me to stay for another season but my work and family situation allowed me to talk to Town.
“I told Hunslet first of my decision because they were absolutely superb with me from the day I signed.
“I really enjoyed my season there, playing with a great group of lads and I’ve wished them all the best for 2023.
“I’m looking forward to getting stuck into training because I feel fit and raring to go again.
“I have always said that when the day comes that I don’t feel fit enough or keen enough, that’s when I will hang up my boots.”
His original stint with Town lasted 11 years and although now 36 years of age he still has plenty left to give to the game.
He played over 200 games for Town and was granted a testimonial for the 2017 season.
A former Hensingham junior player he played for Castleford and Doncaster while a student, and then Batley before joining Town in 2007.
He went on to become one of the toughest tackling centres of his era and continued that into his time at Whitehaven.
Mossop will be a likely candidate for the Town captaincy given his standing in the game over his long career.
