Workington maintained their promotion push with a 2-1 win at Burscough against the nomads of Skelmersdale Utd.
It was a win that stemmed from a flying start as Dav Symington fired Reds in front inside 30 seconds from the first attack of the game.
Greg McCarragher pinched a ball in mid-field, fed Lewis Reilly and he laid on a perfect ball across the box where Symington fired past home keeper Sam Ashton.
Danny Grainger’s men controlled the game from that point, certainly until half-time, and they had the bonus of a second goal on 42 minutes.
Symington lashed in another fiercely struck shot which came back off the bar and McCarragher was there to drive in the second.
Unfortunately there was a flashpoint right at the end of the half, a clash between Ruben Jerome and the home side’s Ethan Devine, which ended with two red cards produced by referee Mustafa Zharir.
It meant ten against ten for the second half and it was Skelmersdale who were able to strike first when they pulled a goal back.
The Reds defence was caught out by a ball played in behind and when it was returned substitute Taylor Prescott and a tap in.
Workington dug in well, though, well marshalled by man of the match Dan Wordsworth who featured with a number of brave blocks.
Jim Atkinson had to make one close-range save while at the other end Symington was nearest for Reds with a free kick lifted over the wall and the bar.
Afterwards manager Danny Grainger said he thought the first-half performance was one of the best so far this season.
“We were so comfortable in possession and I thought it was an excellent 45 minutes.
“Unfortunately the two sendings-off changed the game. I didn’t think either should have been shown a red and although it’s one from each side it did change the way we played.
“In the end I can’t speak highly enough of the lads, they all put a shift in to make sure we got through for the points.”
