New parking restrictions to be introduced outside South Lakes school

New parking restrictions are set to be introduced along sections of road in Ulverston – including outside a school.

Markings preventing stopping on school days between 8am and 5pm are to be introduced to a stretch outside Church Walk CE Primary School after proposals were approved by the county council’s local committee for South Lakeland.

‘No waiting at any time’ restrictions  – double yellow lines – are to be brought in along sections of Church Walk, Beech Bank, Sea View and Tarn Side.

A report on the restrictions was produced by Angela Jones, executive director of economy and infrastructure at the county council, ahead of Thursday’s local committee meeting.

Ms Jones said the aim of the restrictions was to ‘improve parking and congestion’.

“The parking restrictions are proposed at sections of the highway where parked vehicles can restrict visibility – at junctions, for example  – and/or obstruct the highway,” she said.

“The length of the restrictions has been minimised, where possible, in order to fulfil these aims whilst retaining the greatest amount of parking provision.

“Proposed amendments to the times that the school ‘keep clear’ markings are enforceable will free up this section to allow parking at evenings, weekends and school holidays, thus creating more available parking.”

Ms Jones said a statutory consultation and advertisement period began on September 23 of this year, and ended on October 14. One response – an objection – was received.

The objector said they were ‘in disbelief’ and questioned what the restrictions would achieve ‘besides sending all the cars that parked on the top of Church Walk and Sea View to the bottom of Church Walk where there are no restrictions’.

The objector said they would like resident permits outside 10, 12 and 14 Church Street as these spaces were taken up whenever occupants of the homes ‘nip out’.

Ms Jones said: “Residents’ parking would limit available parking by formalising the current parking arrangements through the introduction of formalised parking bays. The restrictions are to prevent obstruction of the highway taking place.”
