Match referee Andrew Kitchen has called off the League Two game at Brunton Park between Carlisle United and Barrow.
The official inspect the pitch this morning, Friday December 9, and decided it was unfit for play.
The playing surface was covered on Tuesday afternoon with sheets that protect down to -5, but the predicted long cold spell brought temperatures which were lower than forecast, making the pitch unplayable.
With temperatures set to remain on or below zero over the weekend it was agreed that there would be little or no improvement ahead of Saturday’s kick-off time of 1pm.
Also in the county Workington Reds are due to play Bootle at Borough Park and prospects were not good, although a pitch inspection will be held ahead of the opposition’s departure.
The problem at Borough Park at this time of the year is that the town end goal does not receive the sun which helps soften other parts of the pitch.
Bootle had not requested an early kick-off because of the England game so it is still fixed for 3pm but is already very doubtful.
In the Northern League First Division prospects aren’t good at all for Penrith’s trip to Thornaby or Carlisle City’s home game with West Allotment Celtic.
Penrith chairman Billy Williams has said Thornaby have already warned him that there is little chance of a game.
Kendal Town are due to entertain New Mills in the Macron Cup but again subject to a pitch inspection before the visitors are due to travel.
