Lake District village set to have 20mph speed limit and parking restrictions

A 20mph speed limit through the centre of a Lake District village is to be introduced.

The restrictions in Staveley were voted through by a meeting of the county council’s local committee for South Lakeland.

“There’s a lot of people walking around the village, and a few [drivers] do travel at excessive speed,” said county councillor Stan Collins, who lives in Staveley.

“Most people, in fact, are already travelling at sensible speeds. It’s just a few people that feel the safety of the public isn’t really a concern.”

A 20mph speed limit is to apply to:

  • The entire lengths of Scroggs Close; Silver Street; The Green; Back Lane; Crag View; School Lane; Brow Lane
  • The access road to the houses at the back of the Old Vicarage; Main Street; Gowan Terrace; Fairfield Close; The Banks; Gowan Cresent; Station Road; and Beck Nook.
  • Sections of Kentmere Road; Windermere Road; Kendal Road; and Crook Road.

Cllr Collins said the speed restrictions were not as extensive as he and the parish council wanted.

“But in order to put more in, you have got to do a lot of work on the road,” he said. “I have been pushing for this ever since it became clear that it was desirable, which would have been about four or five years ago.”

Cllr Collins said that the introduction of the 20mph limit had been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

A number of parking restrictions are also set to be introduced. They are to include one-hour and 30-minute waiting limits in Main Street, with exemptions for some Staveley residents.

“I think that the parking restrictions should stop one of the things which was blighting the village, which was people coming and parking on Main Street all day and going for a walk, catching the train, things like that,” said Cllr Collins.

“In one instance, we actually had someone park one of those huge Winnebago things right outside the Post Office. We have had lots of others where people have had to come to the village from areas outside of the village to do a bit of shopping.”

The parking and speed restrictions are set to be introduced on December 19.
