The funeral of popular West Cumbrian sportsman Iain Denny will be held next week.

In a social media post, the family said: “We would like to thank everyone for all their kind messages, cards, flowers and prayers. As a family we have been completely overwhelmed by your kind words about dad.”

His funeral will be held on Thursday, December 29 at St Mary’s RC Church, Church Road, Harrington at 10am, followed by a short service at Distington Crematorium at 11.15am.

The family added: “We would like to invite all to the Brewery House, High Harrington following the service to remember dad.”

Iain, 63, a former Workington Town rugby league professional, was held in particularly high regard in the cricketing community after many years as coach and administrator.

He had a hand in the early development of England cricket captain Ben Stokes.

Barrow-born, Iain moved to Workington at a young age and was a pupil of Workington Grammar School where he excelled at rugby union and cricket. Read more about his life here.
