Carlisle United went down 2-1 at Northampton Town last night despite taking the lead early in the second-half.
In a goal-less first half United had been a clear second best for possession and hadn’t managed a shot on target.
But they stepped it up after the interval and by the end had managed nine shots at goal, two of which were on target.
One of them from Jack Armer in a scramble, set-up by Kristian Dennis, had given them the lead on 50 minutes but within six minutes the Cobblers had scored twice to go in front and they were able to hold the lead to the end, including over eight minutes of stoppage time.
Because of postponements neither side had played for over two weeks and that was evident in a cagey first-half.
The one real save had to be made by Carlisle’s Tomas Holy just before the break when he made a good save to keep out a low shot from the League’s joint top scorer Sam Hoskins.
It was Carlisle who made the breakthrough five minutes into the second half when Jack Armer netted after a goalmouth scramble. It was hotly contested by Northampton who claimed an off-side.
Within six minutes the game had been turned on its head. First Sam Sherring headed home a Hoskins corner and then Louis Appere produced a composed finish by driving s shot into the bottom corner.
Paul Huntington produced a superb tackle to prevent Kieron Bowie getting a shot away when Northampton seemed to be in again.
Late on Tobi Sho-Silva had the ball in the back of the net from a corner for Carlisle but the off-side flag was already up and the Cumbrians couldn’t force an equaliser in stoppage time.
