Whitehaven triallists revealed ahead of Ike Southward Memorial Trophy

Whitehaven will look at four trialists during their three pre-season friendlies as they prepare for their Betfred Championship season which starts next month.

Two of them – Kells prop Ross Ainley and former Oldham and Workington prop John Hutchings have already been announced.

The club have now named the other two trialists as Lewis Fairhurst and Jorge Cabral who have joined the club for one month. 

Fairhurst is a former Hemel, Dewsbury, North Wales and Keighley player who has more recently being playing for Thatto Heath in the NCL when he won the man of the match award in the 2021 NCL Grand Final gainst Wath Brow.

A goal-kicker he is equally at home at full back, half back or hooker.

Cabral is a winger with experience in both League and Union and has represented his Brazilian heritage alongside a number of other representative honours, including being selected for the North squad in the annual University Rugby League origin game due to be played next month.

They have been brought in to show their paces in the three pre-season games, starting with Sunday’s Ike Southward Memorial Fixture against Workington Town at The LEL Arena.

Ainley, from Kells, scored six tries in his club’s promotion from NCL Division 1 last season and he was voted the club’s most valuable player at the end of season presentation night. 

Hutchings moved into the middle of the field in the pack with Town last season having previously played as a winger. 

Haven will follow the Town game with matches against Wigan and Castleford.

The club has also announced its squad numbers ahead of Sunday’s game and they are as follows:
