A unique collection of carts and farm vehicles are set to go under the hammer at a Cumbrian auction later this month.
The restored vehicles on offer at H&H Auction Rooms, include a farm hay cart, a Governess pony trap, a Kent apple cart, a rubber wheeled wagonette made by a royal warranted company in Kinross, and a dog trap restored by a Scottish company, also with royal connections.
They have been collected by the Allans, of Silloth, over many years, plus more from small museums and private vendors and H&H Auction Rooms said it was possibly the biggest single sale of historic carts and farm vehicles it has ever offered.
They are part of the auction rooms’ first garden sale of 2023 and other lots include chimney pots, sandstone troughs, stoneware and statuettes, and a salt glaze strawberry planter made in the form of a tree trunk at the Errington Reay pottery at Bardon Mill, Northumberland, in the late 19th century.
It will be held on Saturday, March 18 at the Borderway Exhibition Hall near Carlisle.
Stephen Farthing, auctioneer and valuer, said: “We are very grateful to Mr and Mrs Allan for allowing us to offer their wonderful collection for sale. They have built up a remarkable, museum standard fleet of vehicles that give us a unique insight into old-fashioned horse-powered transport, and now they feel it is time to quite literally pass the reins.
“By moving the sale to a Saturday I hope we can persuade buyers to make this a family day out. The carts and traps are fascinating, and the garden artefacts range very widely in size and guide price which gives everybody a chance to release their inner garden designer and bid for something large or small.”
