Kendal woman takes on multiple challenges for charity in memory of dad

A Kendal woman is taking on multiple challenges for charity in memory of her dad.

Nicola Goldby, who lost her dad Ian Woolsey to Motor Neurone Disease, is embarking on a new challenge each month to raise money and awareness for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

She said: “Losing dad to Motor Neurone Disease came as such a shock to us all, it happened so quickly. Until his diagnosis we knew nothing about MND and without the support of his care team we would have been completely unprepared for the changes he was about to face.

“Everyone who helped look after and care for dad did an amazing job for which I will be forever grateful and I wanted to be able to give something back in return.

“I started this fundraiser for the MNDA in dads name to highlight just some of the many challenges faced by people diagnosed with MND every day and to raise money so that the MNDA can continue their vital work supporting other families and in the hopes that together one day we may be able to find a cure to this most awful of diseases.”

Each challenge will push Nicola’s mind and body to the limit and will be linked to the different challenges that MND presents to individuals and their families

So far, Nicola has swam in Gurnal Dubin in Cumbria in January without a wetsuit followed by a 16 mile bike ride while wearing 10kg of weight to signify the ‘weight of diagnosis’.

She has a number of other challenges planned throughout the year and is hoping to raise as much as possible in memory of Ian.

The areas covered will be as follows:

January – Funding and where you can get help.

February – Mental support – support groups for both diagnosed and families

March – Loss of speech – voice banking and alternative methods of communication.

April – Loss of mobility – home alterations and where you can hire equipment

May – Getting through things together and making memories

June – Taking things on one step at a time and not overloading yourself

July – Fundraising to find a cure
