Carlisle’s grip on an automatic promotion place was loosened by a last gasp defeat at Gillingham.
The only goal came in the fourth minute of added time at the end when Shaun Williams supplied the finish for the Gills who were claiming their seventh victory in their last eight home games.
Tomas Holy, a former Gillingham keeper had parried a shot from Dom Jefferies but it fell into the path of the unmarked Williams, who fired home from close range.
It was probably a fair reflection on the game with the Gills just shading it as on out-of-sorts Carlisle only managed one shot on target.
That didn’t come until the 80th minute and Kristian Dennis’ effort didn’t trouble home keeper Glenn Morris.
Consequently the closest calls to a goal were at the Carlisle end as Oli Hawkins miscued a header on the hour; Tim Dieng fired weakly at Holy and Max Ehmer directed his header from a corner straight into Holy’s waiting hands.
Gillingham have pulled impressively away from the relegation zone and should have no more concerns but for Carlisle it’s going to be a battle to get back into an automatic promotion place.
The problem has been clear over the last three games when they haven’t scored a single goal – and this from a side which have been the division’s top scorers.
