Festival of Running to return to Workington

Representatives of Cumberland AC try out the bench at Borough Park.

A popular running event will have its climax at Workington Reds’ Borough Park in August.

The Festival of Running will be staged on Sunday, August 6 and has proved popular in previous stagings.

The initial event took place in 2017 to coincide with the opening of the new Workington Sports Centre.

Since then Cumberland AC and Workington Town Council have put on the event in 2019 and 2022, following COVID.

This year the event will be based at the Reds’ ground for the first time with all the races finishing running into the stadium and around the grounds.

There are three races for people to enter, 1k fun run (free to enter), 5k and 10k. The courses have been changed slightly this year to allow for the change in venue.

The 1k is very popular and is a great start to the event. The 5k and 10k are out and back courses, with the prospect of a good time for the more serious runners over either course.

The 5k offers a nice opportunity for regular park runners and walkers to complete a different course and enjoy being part of this event.

A member of the Cumberland AC said: “We really appreciate the support from Borough Park in allowing the use of their grounds and facilities as well as Workington Town Council who continue to support the event.”

A spokesman for the town council said: “We are delighted to be able to bring the Festival of Running to Workington again. We thank Workington AFC for agreeing to be our hosts this year and to the team at Cumberland Athletics club who we work in partnership with to organise the event.

“All runners will finish their races with a final lap around the Reds pitch and we think this will really add to the atmosphere of an already great event.  We encourage everyone of all ages and all levels of fitness to get involved.

“We will be holding 1k, 5k and 10k races, but there will also be food and drink, face painting by Katy Leese Artistry and entertainment from Imagination Parties, so everyone can really make a day of it.”

A spokesman for the Reds added: “We are really excited to partner with Cumberland AC and Workington Town Council to host this annual event.

“The Festival of Running is just the sort of community event we should be attracting to the proposed new Cumberland Sports Village in the future.

“Forging these links with local sports groups going forward is of paramount importance for the success of this project.”
