Trailing resumed at Cold Fell and although numbers were improved from Thursday night some of the main players were keeping their dogs back to race fresh on Monday at The HTA May Day Trails at Helton.

There were 17 hounds involved in the senior trail and it was Denis Pear and Jackie Gill’s Miterdale Duchess who came with a lead and won nicely by about four or five lengths from the Napier family’s Foxparke Beep Beep.

A total of 23 were slipped for the open puppy race with Glamorous Ava starting as favourite as some of the recent winning hounds were being rested for Monday.

As they came into view there were a few with a chance of winning but it was Glamorous Ava who just came clear to win for James and Ava McClelland giving them their first win of the season.

Huntsman’s Sparkle finished in second place for Denise and Jenny Bland and Lisa Crosby.

There was a good slip in the Open Maidens with 39 being let loose.  When they came back into view on the finish it was Alan Blacklock’s Busy Again which had the strongest finish to collect the win from Mike Watson’s Persian Gold in second and Thorn Thunder finishing fast to get third place for Martin and Molly Burrows.

This win for Alan takes his charge to joint second place in the Open Maiden competition.

There were slightly less runners in the Open Restricted but still a good slip with 24 hounds entered.

As they came into sight it was Debbie and Lana McGee’s Apache raider which just put in a late charge to win the race from Colin Satterthwaite’s Thorn Pop which finished second and Tesla finishing third for Donna and Shaun Hetherington.

The four points for Tesla keep him top of the Open Restricted table with Thorn Pop in second place close behind.

All attention switches to Helton, near Penrith on Monday for the HTA May Day Trails, with the hounds being slipped at 4pm. It’s a later slip to avoid the pony trekking that takes place near Pooley Bridge.

The trails are partly sponsored by Penrith and District Auction Mart. Anyone wishing to attend just need to head for the village of Helton and then head up on to the moor and you will come to the trails. Postcode is CA10 2QB.
