Community cafe set to be created in Kendal

A community café is set to be created in Kendal town centre after plans were given the green light.

An interior renovation is to take place at the Grade II listed Coach House, which is linked to Stricklandgate House, also Grade II listed, by a modern extension.

An application submitted to South Lakeland District Council said the Coach House contained a simple kitchen and was used as a community food larder.

It said the building would be developed into a training kitchen serving a community café and community larder at the centre of a community hub. The form said a meeting room situated in the extension would become the café.

A heritage statement published online said Stricklandgate House in Stricklandgate was home to 12 charitable or voluntary organisations that supported the welfare and caring needs of local people.

Applications for full and listed planning consent were submitted by Jill Salmon, of Stricklandgate House Trust Ltd.

The organisation’s website says the trust was set up in 1993 to provide accommodation and common services and facilities for voluntary organisations in South Lakeland.

The plans were given approval by Westmorland and Furness Council, the unitary authority that came into existence on April 1 of this year.
