Former Workington Reds manager Chris Willcock has left Stalybridge Celtic following the Bower Fold club’s relegation.

It was the first time that Willcock had suffered a relegation on his CV during a lengthy managerial career. Last season he took Reds to runners-up spot in NPL West before losing in the play-offs.

Celtic only confirmed his departure after a relative has posted on Twitter that he had left the club.

Willcock joined the club in May 2022 after a season at Workington and Celtic’s response, also on Twitter was: “The club can confirm that Chris Willcock has left his position as first team manager.

“We’d like to place our thanks to Chris, Lincoln and Warren for their dedication, commitment and efforts during a difficult season. We wish them all the best for the future.”

The family member had said earlier: “People might not know that Chris left the club last night. Despite the very challenging circumstances he has enjoyed his time at Celtic. He would like to express his thanks to the supporters for their dedication, support and passion throughout the season.”
