A driver high on cocaine as he hit twice the 30mph speed limit late at night on roads around Cleator Moor has been given six months by a judge to prove he is committed to mend his ways.
Ryan Benson, 39, was followed by police as he drove in circles in a Peugeot 607 through the built-up areas of Montreal, Clayton, Buckle and Melbreak avenues, along with Cragg Road, just after midnight on October 25. At one stage, dashcam footage captured an officer hit 60mph in a 30mph in a bid to keep up.
This was, prosecutor Paul Brookwell told Carlisle Crown Court, an inappropriate speed with Benson having also crossed give way markings without braking. After being stopped, Benson was found to be over the legal driving limit for cocaine.
He later admitted dangerous driving and drug-driving charges when brought to court.
Defence barrister Anthony Parkinson said Benson, of Main Street, Frizington, had been planning to take his own life that night while in an extremely emotional state.
Yet he had been accessing counselling since late last year. A support package was in place and Mr Parkinson suggested immediate imprisonment would be a backward step for the defendant.
After hearing submissions, Judge Nicholas Barker opted to defer passing sentencing for six months. This would allow Benson to prove he was committed to mending his ways and to stay out of trouble.
Benson was bailed until 18th December, when Judge Barker is due to receive a progress report before deciding on the most appropriate punishment.
