Cumbria’s fleet of gritters will be setting off on a summer outing across the county’s roads next week.
Cumberland Council is telling residents not to panic if they see one of the gritters and to be aware that it is just the Highways team planning winter routes in advance.
As part of the county gearing up for another winter season, the team have to conduct testing to identify any potential issues or challenges that may arise on their routes during the winter season.
This gives the council the chance to make necessary adjustments to where the gritters travel in the county before the winter season begins.
The gritters will be leaving depots from Lillyhall, Dalston and Brampton, starting today and lasting for a week.
Cumberland Council is also set to launch its ‘winter ready’ campaign in October 2023, which will run until April 2024.
The campaign aims to provide information, advice and guidance on cold weather and winter related issues.
Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s executive portfolio holder for sustainable, resilient and connected Places, said: “I am pleased that our Highways teams are testing the routes in preparation for winter.
“If anyone sees a gritter on the roads, please don’t be concerned, they are ensuring we are ready for winter to give the best possible service to our community.”
