A key appointment has been made by H&H Land and Estates as it expands its environment and forestry team.

Jake Moscrop, whose family farm near Bewcastle, joins the company as an environment and conservation adviser.

He has a first-class honours degree in biological sciences from the University of Durham and a PhD in plant sciences from Cambridge, but describes himself first and foremost as a farmer.

He said: “When I finished my PhD in 2022, I returned to the family farm to explore how me and my parents can adapt our farming practices to promote biodiversity, cut carbon, and keep the business viable”.

“It is currently a challenging time for farming in the UK, and I am very interested in how emerging opportunities for farmers can help agriculture and conservation work better together.

“Environmental schemes provide great potential to improve our natural landscapes whilst offering considerable benefits for farmers. I’m looking forward to being able to support farmers and landowners and help them make the most of these opportunities.”

Tracey Jackson, associate and head of environment and forestry, said: “Jake’s expertise and experience will enable him to offer rounded advice for famers considering entering emerging environmental schemes, and assist us with ecological surveys including baseline surveys for biodiversity net gain.”
