Penrith MP Neil Hudson linked to Matt Hancock’s seat in next election

Penrith and the Border MP Neil Hudson has today been linked with standing as a candidate for the Conservatives in West Suffolk.

Dr Hudson was named on social media as being among those on a six-strong long list for the constituency, where agricultural, food and tourism are significant sectors of the economy.

The seat is held by Matt Hancock, the controversial former health secretary and I’m A Celebrity contestant, who now sits as an independent, but plans to stand down at the next General Election.

The claim was made today by national political broadcaster Michael Crick, who has worked for ITN, Channel 4 and the BBC, who cited party sources and now attempts to “lift the secrecy on politics”.

Dr Hudson won the Penrith and the Border constituency in 2019 with an 18,519 majority.

Earlier this year, he lost a selection battle for what will be a newly-configured Penrith and the Solway, with members favouring current Workington MP Mark Jenkinson as the preferred candidate.

We have previously asked Dr Hudson’s office to comment on rumours that he may stand in another constituency at the next election, but there has been no response.
