Carlisle United are reported to be in talks with the experienced striker Sean Maguire who was released by Coventry City last season.
The Blues are trying to beef up their attack before the start of the new season in League One after losing the services of Kristian Dennis and Omari Patrick.
Luton-born Maguire, 29, is currently a free agent and is probably best known for a long spell with Preston North End when he played 170 games, with 24 goals in six years at Deepdale.
Reporter Alan Nixon has claimed on his Patreon page that the Cumbrians have launched an ‘ambitious’ move to try and lure him to Brunton Park this summer.
Maguire has been operating at Championship level for the past seven years with Preston and then Coventry.
Coventry signed him in January and he went on to play seven times for Mark Robins’ side during the second-half of last term as they reached the play-off final at Wembley. However, the Sky Blues were denied promotion to the Premier League after losing to Luton Town on penalties and Maguire was released afterwards.
Maguire is an international with 11 caps for the Republic of Ireland after a dozen in the Under-21s and his first three with the Under-19s.
Although born in Luton his parents returned to Kilkenny when he was just two months old and as such was eligible to play for England and the Republic.
A lot of his football has been in southern Ireland with Sligo Rovers, Dundalk and Cork City but he did have 33 games on loan with Accrington Stanley (2014/15) when he scored seven times in 33 games.
