Penrith lost their opening Northern League game at Whitley Bay 2-0 but there were still positives to take from it for manager Darren Edmondson.
A goal in each half from Harvey Neary, in the 19th and 52nd minutes, earned the points for the home side but Edmondson said he felt the score-line flattered them.
“I don’t think we really did ourselves justice in the first half. We have three or four players stepping up a League so they were finding their feet.
“But in the second-half I was really pleased with how we performed and we created six really good chances but unfortunately didn’t take any of them.
“I don’t think there’s much doubt that Whitley Bay will be a top five side this season and I think we will have more of an idea of where we are going to be on Tuesday after we’ve been to Tow Law.
“They drew 1-1 with Carlisle City on Saturday and I expect them to be a sort of mid-table side so it will be a bit of a yard-stick for our chances this season,” said Edmondson.
The Bonny Blues are set to play their first ten matches away from home while their Frenchfields pitch is replaced, so any points picked-up on the road in this glut of travelling, will be extra valuable.
Manager Edmondson is still trying to bring players into his squad as he looks for a competitive start in a difficult sequence of fixtures – all away.
