Armed officers were deployed by Cumbria police after an incident in the west of the county last night.
Police were called to Cragg Road in Cleator Moor at round 8.20pm after someone spotted a man with a firearm at a property.
Firearms officers were deployed as a precaution and a cordon was put in place for safety.
A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. He remains in police custody.
