A man has admitted assaulting his mother having struck her with a hypodermic needle.

Brendan McCluskey, 46, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court earlier today and faced three charges.

During a short hearing, McCluskey, of no fixed address, admitted assaulting his mother, causing actual bodily harm. This arises out of an incident on June 17 this year when, it is said, he hit her with the needle.

McCluskey also admitted illegal possession of the illegal class B controlled drug amphetamine, on both July 13 and 15 this year.

Judge Nicholas Barker adjourned the case and stated that the assault offence admitted by the defendant was a serious matter.

A probation service pre-sentence report containing background information about McCluskey will now be prepared ahead of a sentencing hearing.

This is due to take place at the crown court on September 11 when it is envisaged that a victim impact statement provided by McCluskey’s mother will also be considered.

In the meantime, McCluskey was remanded in custody by Judge Barker.
