A 7,000-name petition against plans for a South Cumbrian holiday resort has been presented to Barrow’s mayor.
Plans have been submitted for the development at Roanhead Farm, near Askam.
The multi-million-pound 450 lodge resort proposal has sparked controversy in the area as locals and nature charities are concerned about the impact it will have on the area.
A protest was organised in Barrow today, Saturday August 26, and the petition against the plans was handed over to the town mayor by the Save Roanhead Group.
Kelly Holland, founder of Save Roanhead, said at the event: “We urge Westmorland and Furness Council to do the right thing and turn down this proposal.”
Barrow mayor Chris Altree, during his speech after receiving the petition, said: “This is such an amazing turn out. Barrow Town Council is against this, so the Barrow Town Council is behind you as is the rest of the parish councils in the area – keep up the good work
But objectors say the increase in traffic from visitors, plus the impact on the area’s nature, would be detrimental. The group says it is the ‘wrong place and wrong type’ of development for the area.
Kelly told the protestors that gathered that the group had heard a decision about the proposal will not be made until at least next year, but that has not been confirmed.
She added: “There are over 3,300 objections. Although we handed over our 7,000-strong petition today – our petition remains open and people are still most welcome to join our Facebook page.”
