This weekend’s Taste Cumbria food festival will only be held for one day only due to the weather forecast.

High gusts of wind are predicted for Sunday and organiser Cumberland Council said the Cockermouth event will be cut short as a result.

A spokesman said: “As event organisers, Cumberland Council’s top priority is the health, safety and welfare of our visitors, staff and traders. We’re used to rain in Cumbria, but unfortunately windy conditions can be highly dangerous where gazebos and marquees are concerned.”

Stalls will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday in Main Street, Market Place and Memorial Gardens Car Park.

The Market Place Street party is still going ahead, and there will be live music on the main stage in the drinks tent on Memorial Gardens, as well as acoustic musicians on Main Street and Market Place.

Also in Memorial Gardens Car Park is the hot food court and a children’s fairground. There will be children’s entertainment, including some crazy science experiments, in The Vicky shared workspace on High Sand Lane, and there will also be walkabout street theatre all around the town.

Friday night’s Supper Club is still going ahead, as is the Cocktail Masterclass on Saturday. Both are ticketed events and are sold out.

The spokesman added: “We are so sad to make this decision but please come and enjoy the festival on Saturday. Thank you for your understanding – please visit Cockermouth, support your local businesses and have a great time!”
