Spike Canavan heads towards the Keswick goal (Ben Challis)

There were goals galore this weekend with every Cumberland County League in action managing to score at least once.

There were seven in a tight Benevolent Cup second round tie at Keswick where the home side were beaten 4-3 by Bransty Rangers.

The Whitehaven side got through with goals from Ryan Cornish, Spike Canavan, Stewart O’Pray and Liam O’Pray while on the scoresheet for Keswick were Will Atkinson (2) and Alfie West.

In the Premier Division, Aspatria were not in action which gave Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves the opportunity to move top if they could win at Maryport Athletic.

Unfortunately for them they found their opponents in a ruthless mood and were beaten 5-1.

There was a double from Callum Casson plus goals from Ciaran Booty, Ciaran Laverty and Ryan Porter to give Maryport their first win of the season.

Jake Martin had actually given Celtic Reserves the lead in a dominant first 20 minutes but after that Athletic took control to run out clear winners.

Bransty’s Kier Starkie holds of Keswick’s Isaac Beechey (Ben Challis)

Unisun Athletic also had the chance to move top and they took it with a 5-1 win over Gosforth. Dorin Covaci, Liam Graham, Josh Morley, Charlie Thomson and Ben Atkinson all found the net for Carlisle-based Unisun with Sam Wordsworth getting a late consolation for Gosforth.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Carlisle City Development beat Wigton Harriers 3-1 for their first win of the season with goals from Bobby Dixon (2) and Ellis Dickinson. Tom Hill was on the scoreboard for Harriers.

Bransty’s Ryan Cornish fires in for the opening goal (Ben Challis)

In Division One, Pottery Park in Dearham was the place to be for a proper goal feast as it hosted a 12-goal thriller.

Windscale Reserves were the visitors and they had Bobby Fitzpatrick (2), Lewis Selkirk (2), Coady Scott and Cohan McAlone all netting for them.

Four goals from Jack Brown with Matthew Oglanby and Kyle Adlard also on the scoresheet for Dearham United made sure this entertaining tie finished 6-6.

Two goals for Keswick’s Will Atkinson (Ben Challis)

Despite no goals in the first half, Mirehouse verses Silloth came to life in the second half as the hosts edged past their opponents 4-3. Kyle Bayliff netted himself a hat-trick with Ryan Smith also finding the back of the net for Mirehouse, Silloth goal scorers were Spencer Irving (2) and Josh Williamson.

Goals from Luke Graham (2) and Ryan Gorley weren’t enough to prevent Cockermouth’s unbeaten run ending at the hands of Whitehaven Reserves on Saturday. Four goals from Shane Tyson and another goal from Jenson Irving gave Haven a 5-3 away win.
