On a night of frustration for Carlisle United, a stunning strike right at the death, from Jordan Gibson earned the Cumbrians a much-needed point at home to Peterborough.
Play had reached the sixth minute of time added on when Gibson seized onto a Posh clearance and from 30 yards blasted a first-time shot at goal. It did have the help of a deflection, but Carlisle won’t worry about that, as it found the net.
That late goal prevented the Blues from dropping into the relegation zone, although just on goal difference over Fleetwood Town.
Although Peterborough looked the better side for long periods, with much more possession, Carlisle felt hard done to on two occasions when two fairly clear penalties were ignored by the referee.
Carlisle in fact only managed one shot on target, and that was Gibson;s late leveller which took a deflection past goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic.
Ronnie Edwards had opened the scoring for the visitors on 74 minutes when he thumped home a header from a free-kick by Joel Randall.
Posh had roared out of the traps from the start and Jonson Clarke-Harris had a great chance inside two minutes but fired over from 12 yards.
The same player was closer with a snap shot midway through the half which Tomas Holy did well to palm away.
Then Holy, restored between the Carlisle posts, got down well to a low shot from Ephron Mason-Clark and turn it onto the post.
Although Carlisle were unable to get in any telling blows at Bilokapic’s goal they did when it mattered and Gibson’s late gamble paid off handsomely.
