Former Carlisle United manager Keith Millen has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association.
No interim boss of Division Two Gillingham he was sent-off during the game against Walsall on Saturday in the 28th minute.
He was ordered to the stands for tripping Walsall winger Tom Knowles as he attempted to take a throw-in.
He has until Friday, 20 October to answer a charge of improper behaviour.
Millen stepped-up to take temporary charge after the sacking of Neil Harris earlier this month,
It was the third game he had overseen – starting with a 2-1 home League win over MK Dons; a 5-1 defeat at League One leaders Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy and then the set-back at Walsall in Leaue Two.
Gillingham have confirmed that Millen will remain in charge for Saturday’s League Two home game against Notts County.
He will be allowed in the dugout for the game as any potential suspension would be deferred and pending the result of his FA hearing.
Gillingham owner Brad Galinson has said that the club had interviewed over 20 candidates for the job and hope to make an announcement next week. Millen has said he does not want to be considered for the role on a permanent basis.
