Carlisle United went desperately close to snatching a draw at Portsmouth in League One only to be denied at the death.
The League leaders scored the only goal of the game in the third minute of stoppage time at the end.
Conor Shaughnessy rose highest to get in a header which found the net to sink Carlisle hearts.
Pompey had dominated the first-half but Carlisle defended really stoutly and, indeed, almost grabbed the lead. A Sean Maguire cross shot had caused problems but was somehow scrambled clear.
The home side’s Colby Bishop had a header easily gathered by Tomas Holy while another flew over the bar. It wasn’t his day because he also missed the best chance when he sliced wide from six yards.
Carlisle were close to grabbing the lead at the start of the second half and although Alfie McCalmont didn’t really get hold of his shot it did hit the post.
They went close again in the 90th minute when a shot from Dan Butterworth was pushed round the post by home keeper Will Norris.
The visitors continued to threaten and almost snatched it in the final minute but a Dan Butterworth strike was pushed around the post by Will Norris.
Three minutes later Portsmouth won it with Shaughnessy’s pinpoint header.
