Gainsborough Trinity scored their first away win of the season to spoil Dan Wordsworth’s farewell to Workington.
The 33-year-old Wordsworth had announced in mid-week he would be retiring after this game following over 330 appearances in 12 years at the club.
He led the team out to a fine reception from the 740 crowd and gave his usual whole-hearted, committed performance until he was substituted in the 79th minute.
It had looked promising enough early on when Workington took the lead after 33 minutes.
Scott Allison picked the ball up in mid-field, fed Kofi Moore out wide and his low cross was slid home from eight yards by Steven Rigg.

Trinity, who had hit the bar through Declan Howe, drew level just before half-time. Centre-half Gabriel Rios Newton was dispossessed just outside the area and Lavelle Clark went on to fire into the bottom corner.

The visitors went in front on 55 minutes when Howe cut inside from the left and fired home right footed beyond keeper Jim Atkinson.
Two minutes later Workington were level. From a quick throw-in Kitt Nelson was given the ball just outside the area and the Preston loanee fired past Luke Jackson.

The winning goal came from the penalty spot on 73 minutes when Harrison Poulter cut into the area, seemed to collide with Brad Hubbold who stood his ground and the referee awarded a penalty.

From the spot Howe fired home and it was enough to see them home, although Rigg was close to a late equaliser when he headed over in the last of the five minutes added on.

Workington are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Marske United in the NPL Premier Division.
