
Flimby Social maintained their top spot in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League Division One with a 4-1 home victory over Division Two’s Maryport Social.
A first frame win for Kevin Kirkham gave his team, not only a first frame lead, but also ensured the Flimby cueist kept the number one spot in the top tier averages.
A victory for Michael ‘Sid’ Walker put the Flimby side 2-0 up but as Gary Miller took the third to make it 2-1, Maryport were still in the match.
This didn’t deter the Division One leaders, however, and with a convincing victory for Sal Cakmak, followed by a win from captain Geoff Banton the Flimby outfit powered to a solid 4-1 match triumph.
Flimby sit on a Division One tally of 21 points with Maryport on a Division Two seven point total.
Workington’s United Club A travelled the short distance to Workington Conservative Club and with a 3-2 deciding frame win they swapped places with their opponents into Division One third place.
Richard McCarthy battled well to take the first for the Cons side but with Andrew Mitchelhill and Peter O’Hagan taking the next two the United Club A moved 2-1 ahead.
A cool break of 31 in the penultimate frame from Cons’ Dave Holland was enough for the tier two averages leader to force a fifth frame shootout between the two league heavyweights.
Home advantage probably put the Cons favourite for the victory, however with a really determined performance it was Mark Suitor who claimed the match win for the United Club A side and put them on a 16- point Division One total.
Workington Cons also sit on 16 points but are a place lower due to the number of wins rule.
Division One’s Station Road Club made the journey from Workington to Whitehaven to take on Division Two’s Rack Shack and even though they walked away with a 3-2 victory they still sit at the bottom of the table on a 15 point total.
Doubles champions Darren Lawson and Tom Thompson each took one of the first two frames to put Station Road Club 2-0 up but it was Adam Morilla who dragged the Whitehaven outfit back into the game with a victory in the third.
At 2-1 the fourth frame was key to the match result with both teams looking towards a victory.
In a close affair it was John Teasdale who showed the greater determination and in taking the balls he needed the Station Road Club cueist ensured his team established an unassailable 3-1 lead.
Even though the match result was decided the last frame still offered a point and in finishing the frame off nicely it was Chris McKelvey who nicked it for the Rack Shack to put some respectability into the scoreline.
The Rack Shack remain bottom of Division Two on five points.
Division One second placed Workington Golf Club A made sure they stayed in touch with leaders Flimby as they defeated Division Two leaders Workington Veterans Club A, 3-2.
The Golf Club A got off to the perfect start as Ryan Ismay took the first but with a break of 67 before Vets A captain, Kevin Basnett, made it 1-1.
The in-form Mark Tunstall made another recordable break in the next to take the frame with a contribution of 30 and put the Vets A side 2-1 up.
At this point in the match the Golf Club A showed their resilience as in taking the next two with wins from Mark Cowen and Mark Brasted the current Division One champions grabbed the home victory to sit just two points behind Flimby on 19 points.
Vets A are top of Division Two on 18 points.
Finally, Workington’s United Club B made sure they stayed in second place in Division Two with a 4-1 home victory against Workington Golf Club B.
Karl Newton won the first for the Golf Club B but from then on it was all downhill for the Division Two third -placed side.
Wins for Wayne Sinclair, Jamie Flitton, Stephen Harrison and Adam Sowden made certain of the match victory as the United B Club side kept up their charge for the Division Two title.
The United Club B sit on 17 points with the Golf Club B on eight points.
