Whitehaven Amateurs got back to winning ways when they beat Wyre Villa 3-1 in their latest West Lancashire League home game.
After losing their last two fixtures it was the perfect opportunity to find their form against the League’s bottom side who are without a win.
They should have been ahead after 12 seconds when Kian Goulding intercepted a pass and crossed for top scorer Owen Woodburn but this time he didn’t show his usual coolness in front of goal and the chance was lost.
Amateurs failed to find any sort of rhythm after that and it was the Villa who took the lead direct from a free kick by Alwyn Flynn.
The home side huffed and puffed and created a few half-chances and had a goal disallowed before equalising just before half-time.
Josh Green latched onto a ball over the top and his first time shot nestled in the bottom corner.
Whitehaven were a lot better in the second half and controlled the game, creating more chances. They got their reward when Goulding fired home a half volley from the edge of the box after Villa had failed to clear a corner.
The game got a little crazy after this when Whitehaven were awarded a penalty that Woodburn coolly dispatched for his 12th goal of the season.
Two Villa players were sin-binned for dissent and a second yellow saw their right back dismissed altogether with the manager following shortly afterwards.
The win meant that Whitehaven’s fine home form continued and they will look to take that into next Saturday’s game at Turton.
